World Cup Willy

I had the pleasure of meeting with another football fan who is combining his passion for helping people with his love of the beautiful game. I was inspired by his commitment and asked for permission to post this recent editorial. Please read and see whether you can assist.

“Football fan Wil [sic] Corker, 30, will be volunteering at the 2010 Homeless World Cup in Rio de Janeiro to raise awareness of homelessness and inspire homeless people to create new lives for themselves through football.

Wil, a dedicated follower of England and part-time Sunday League player, will be working hard over the next few months to raise £2600 by running, cycling and holding a 5 aside tournament.
The Homeless World Cup is an annual event which started in 2003 when it held its first tournament in Graz, Austria. It uses football as a trigger to inspire and energise homeless people to change their own lives; creating opportunities both for the players and other homeless people around the world. This year a record 64 nations will be taking part in the event on Copacabana Beach.

Wil is thrilled to be combining his passion with helping people, “This is a fantastic opportunity to create positive futures for so many people … and to be able to do it through football is wonderful. I’m really excited to be part of it.” Although eager to be there, Wil knows how much is involved in the fundraising, “It’s going to be hard work, but I’ve got lots planned already. I’ll be running in three events including my first half marathon and will be organising other events too, which I hope will be great fun.”

And Wil’s expecting the tournament to be unlike any tournament he’s been to before, “It’s going to be a bit different to cheering from the stands. This time I’ll be organising teams and equipment, collating scores or writing blogs and match reports, but I’m really looking forward to the event. It’s a unique opportunity to meet so many different people and to help create new opportunities for them too.”

Wil is looking for assistance from those who can help: “I’m in the process of organising a fundraising auction in August and am looking for some fantastic items – sports memorabilia, free rounds of golf, tickets for events, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and more – if anyone can help, please contact me with information”.

A website is online with a blog of all Wil’s fundraising news – . You can also follow him on Facebook and Twitter too and you can donate directly at
