The Summer of 2012

I came across this team photo today. It is the Spanish team that won the 2012 European Championships. After a World Cup in South Africa in 2010 that ended in victory over the Netherlands much was expected in 2012 too. Spain defeated the Netherlands 1–0 with a goal from Andrés Iniesta four minutes from the end of extra time. It was watershed for La Roja because Spain’s best performance had been fourth place in 1950. In the seven games they only conceded TWO goals! Previously, they had won the 2008 European Championships so hopes were high for 2012.

The 2012 UEFA European Championship, commonly referred to as UEFA Euro 2012 or simply Euro 2012, was the 14th European Championship for men’s national football teams organised by UEFA. The final tournament, held between 8 June and 1 July 2012, was co-hosted for the first time by Poland and Ukraine, and was won by Spain, who beat Italy 4–0 in the final at the NSC Olimpiyskiy in Kiev, Ukraine.

Spain became the first team to win two consecutive European Championships, and also three straight major tournaments (Euro 2008, 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012).
