Tom Beaver

It’s always great to hear uplifting stories. I was excited to learn about the election of the mayor of New York …..until I found he was an Arsenal fan! Shortly afterwards I read about Tom Beaver’s incredible story of endurance and commitment.

With kind permission of his daughter, Julie Raghib, I add it here.

At the age of 63 my father Tom Beaver walked solo from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

Why did he embark upon such an arduous task ?

Two main reasons those being to help him cope with the profound grief he felt following the death of his much lived wife and also to raise vital funds for his local Children’s Hospice, Francis House in Manchester.

What he lacked in sophisticated navigational gizmos and expensive equipment he certainly made up for in strength of spirit and gritty determination.

So with a second hand rucksack, compass, map, first aid kit and clothing he set off on his mammoth adventure.

At the end of each day’s walk he wrote an account of the places he visited and the characters he met along the way.

Sadly in October 2021 my dad passed away.

In order to honour his memory and great achievement and to raise funds for the children’s hospice I decided to self publish his book.

May I say at this point NO payment is required until you have safely received the book. All profits from every book sold will be donated to Francis House Children’s Hospice.

People who have read the book describe feeling like they are walking alongside him seeing the places he visited and experiencing the highs and lows of this walk. Some have been inspired to embark upon the walk and it has proved to be a very enjoyable read.

Who would this book appeal to?

Those who have completed all or part of the walk and wish to compare notes.

Those who are contemplating doing the walk and require inspiration and information.

Those who would dearly love to do the walk but due to commitments or health limitations are unable to do it and would like to be transported along the journey by the written words of somebody who has partaken in this feat of endurance.

Those who like a good inspirational read.

It would make an ideal Christmas gift for somebody.

The cost of the book is £9.95 and the postage is £2.70.

Payment only required after you have received the book. All profits to go to the Hospice.

If you would like a book please message me and I will send one to you.

Thank you for reading this. Please get in touch with me here

Full details on their excellent new website www.GlasgowFootball.net

I am definitely off to pay them a visit and wish them well. It’s a decent way but FlixBus is a good option and I will make them aware of my desire to sell up and of course to scour their English section for O-M
Thinking on, I could maybe twin this with Edinburgh Fair on 23 November.

GOOD LUCK, GUYS!

Edinburgh Fair

I was in contact with Jim Thompson from the Scottish Football Programme & Memorabilia Fairs Facebook group earlier and he is excited to confirm the details of their next fair. He says all is going well and that a big attendance is expected to support a full house of dealers. I can’t say I am over familiar with Edinburgh despite working there in the 1990s but the location is apparently excellent with good public transport links. The Sky game on TV day is a confirmed 3pm k.o. so I see a double bubble of football that Sunday for many. Enjoy! He has promised to forward details of some of the dealers and their specialties in the next few weeks. I will, of course, add here.

I won’t be exhibiting in Edinburgh myself but I would like to remind people of the South London event on 9th November and that I am currently selling my entire collection. Full details here

Sportingold Auctions

I was with Rich Letts at last weekend’s West London Programme fair and he reminded me that their next auction is coming up next week.

The catalogue is now online and it boasts a huge 1200+ lots! He also reminded me that there is a live webcast of the event. Grab a coffee (or two!) and enjoy the day!

I have had a close inspection and there are some wonderful unique items. I was checking the estimates and current bids and was very encouraged to see there is genuine interest in quality programmes and memorabilia. As many know, I am selling my 20,000 programme collection but the problem I have is a lack of genuinely sought-after items from the 50s and previous. Sportingold seem to have no problem sourcing such items. Respect

Sportingold Auctions

Sportingold are specialist Football memorabilia and Sports memorabilia auctioneers. We hold up to eight quality football memorabilia and sporting memorabilia auctions per year, selling football programmes, tickets, autographed shirts etc.

James Muddiman

I was delighted to find a post showcasing prints of my beloved Priestfield Stadium and other world class grounds this week. I did not recognise the style but immediately liked it. Off I went to find out more

So James Muddiman is the artist and he describes himself thus on his website, “Started up my business in the summer of 1999 after 3 years at chesterfield college where i achieved 2 Alevels in art and design and graphic design .   whilst everyone in my class went on the various universities i decided i wanted to try and start making a living from my art . in 2001 i was amazed to see a pic of mine i’d painted of liverpool fcs treble that year was on a wall on the set of bbc tvs holby city ,over the years my work has been purchased by a few famous footballers including ian st john and ian callaghan, also in 2010 i was honoured to paint chesterfield fc’s final home match vs bournemouth for the club which they sold 300 prints and the original painting is proudly hanging in the boardroom at there no stadium. The proact    everything was seemingly going ok for me in the summer of 2011 until my world fell apart when i was rushed to hospital with want turned out to be acute pancreatitis and a rare neuropathy called MADSAM, after 15 months of fighting the illness and winning my battle i was allowed home ,from there my life and work took off ,i decided i wanted to concentrate on the artwork i was most passionate about ‘stadiums’ around my commission work ,from then on ive never looked back ,last summer i teamed up with newage prints who are the countrys leading printers who do my mugs and phonecases ,since then we have been building a portfolio of my work so i could build this website . hope you like it and maybe come back and purchase something thanks for you time james muddiman jkmartwork”

So James and I have both spent 15 months in hospital. Hope he is also on the mend. Sadly, I can’t draw a line but do recognise talent. Obviously I have showcased people like Dave Baldwin at Papilios, Jim at Gillingham Legends and, of course, the Master Caricaturist Simon Ellinas. If you are an artist, please feel free to make contact.

Essex Retro

Essex Retro Football Show

After the success of yesterday’s West London Programme Fair the tour moves on and we are back to the impressive Chelmsford venue – the home of Essex Cricket Club. I caught up with Greg yesterday and he kindly updated me. It looks a great lineup of exhibitors and I know Greg is very excited to welcome John Wark. Goughy and Steve Perryman were great successes as “special guests” and he anticipates that the former Ipswich hero will be too.

He says, ” The Essex Retro Football Show rolls into Chelmsford once more on Sunday 12th October, featuring another legend of the British game. Following the huge success of June’s event, when Tottenham’s record appearance-maker Steve Perryman was a big hit with attendees, Ipswich, Liverpool and Scotland star John Wark is the latest big name to grace the Essex Retro Football Show. As well as signing trading cards for Futera, the prolific midfielder will also have copies of his new book available to buy and be signed on the day at the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground (home of Essex County Cricket Club). ‘He’s Here, He’s There’, written in conjunction with Neil Prentice, is set to be released in October, so be among the first to get your hands on a copy by visiting October’s Essex Retro Football Show.

Among a host of other football books at the Show – old and new – are event organiser Greg Lansdowne’s various books on football stickers, including ‘Stuck On You’, ‘Panini Football Stickers – The Official Celebration’ and ‘Panini Legends’. Fifteen vendors are already signed up at the time of writing, specialising in everything from programmes to cards, shirts to books, artwork to magazines and so much more.

The Essex Retro Football Show takes place at the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground on Sunday 12th October from 10.30am to 2.00pm. Entry is free and a fully-licensed bar will be in operation.

Updates on the event can be found at www.greglansdowne.co.uk and on the following social media platforms: Essex Retro Football Show on Facebook, @panini_book on X and @greglansdowne on Instagram.
