Torino FC

It was good to get a newsletter from our friends at COPA today about the recent launch of more Torino kit. Torino is a proud, working-class club with a large and committed fanbase. It has not had the success of La Juve, I admit but it is a club held in the heart of many, not least because of the Superga tragedy. The Superga air disaster (Italian: Tragedia di Superga, “Tragedy of Superga”) occurred on 4 May 1949, when a Fiat G.212 airliner of Avio Linee Italiane, carrying the entire Torino football team (popularly known as the Grande Torino), crashed into the retaining wall at the back of the Basilica of Superga, which stands on a hilltop near Turin. All thirty-one people on board were killed. The other clubs in Serie A decided to proclaim Torino winners of the 1948–49 Serie A season The event is still remembered annually.
