Man of the Day

Man of the Day – Match of the Day

Gary Lineker

The story so far..

  • In a tweet on Tuesday, Gary Lineker, the Match of the Day host compared the language used to launch the government’s new asylum policy with that used in 1930s Germany
  • The BBC said it considered his tweets a breach of its guidelines and that Lineker will remain off air until it gets “an agreed and clear position on his use of social media”
  • Following the announcement, other Match of the Day pundits dropped out of Saturday’s show in solidarity with Lineker, including Ian Wright and Alan Shearer and many more followed
  • The BBC then released a statement stating that no pundits or presenters will feature on Saturday’s programme

It’s no real wonder why this guy has an OBE.

Supporters have also been tweeting the hashtag #IStandWithGaryLineker, including comedian Dawn French, presenter Carol Vorderman, and actor Julian Clary ….heroes all.

Alan Shearer and Ian Wright previously announced they would be boycotting the show, in solidarity with Lineker. Late on Friday evening several of the show’s commentators shared a joint statement online, announcing they would also be stepping down from Saturday’s broadcast. The statement was shared by MOTD commentators including Steve Wilson, Conor McNamara, Robyn Rowen and Steven Wyeth.

In the interests of neutrality, I read that the ever-odious Jeremy Clarkson has supported Lineker! What is the word coming to with me agreeing with Clarkson? In the interests of neutrality, I also note that Nigel Farage (Clarkson level of odious but more dangerous) says, “Gary Lineker has been spreading hate and should apologise. This from a man who spread more hate and bile than I have seen since the Thatcher years.

This story will run and run ….
